Perplexity AI Launches Comet Browser and Email Assistant in India, Targeting the Largest Internet Market

Perplexity AI has rolled out its AI-powered Comet browser in India, making it available exclusively to paying Pro subscribers. The browser, built on Chromium—the same open-source base used by Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge—combines familiar browsing with advanced AI-driven productivity tools. This launch underscores Perplexity’s strategic push into India, home to the world’s largest internet population outside of China.

Comet AI: From Browsing to Thinking Partner

Co-founder and CEO Aravind Srinivas officially announced the launch on LinkedIn and characterised Comet as a shift from “browsing to thinking.” Unlike traditional browsers, Comet features a workspace replacing the tabbed interface, allowing users to work across multiple tasks and projects seamlessly without clutter. The AI sidebar runs continuously, offering “agentic” capabilities that help users manage workflows across tabs, compare prices, send emails, schedule meetings, and even complete transactions with user authorisation.

The browser proactively tracks what users are reading and working on, recommending relevant content to enhance efficiency. It also stores browsing history and AI interactions locally with end-to-end encryption, alongside integrations with password managers for security. Enterprise features, including administrative controls and compliance measures, are tailored to attract corporate users.

Email Assistant Enhances Inbox Productivity

Along with Comet, Perplexity has introduced an Email Assistant tool for Max plan subscribers. This AI utility can draft replies, schedule meetings, prioritise inbox emails, and automate responses. It emphasises user privacy by adapting to individual writing styles without learning from email content. Currently supporting Gmail and Outlook, Email Assistant aims to reduce the time spent on repetitive email tasks and increase overall productivity.

Strategic Partnership and Market Entry

Recognising India’s vast online user base, Perplexity has struck a partnership with Bharti Airtel Ltd., providing millions of Airtel customers with free access to Perplexity Pro for one year. This initiative represents an aggressive market entry designed to accelerate adoption among India’s digitally savvy consumers. Perplexity is also expanding its local team, reflecting its commitment to serve and grow in this critical market.

Future Outlook and Industry Impact

The launch of the Comet AI browser and Email Assistant in India positions Perplexity to compete with existing tech giants by offering an integrated AI experience. However, navigating regulatory concerns around browser scraping, content summarisation, and actions performed autonomously will be crucial. Whether incumbents like Google and Microsoft adopt similar AI enhancements remains to be seen.

For Indian users, Comet promises a blend of familiar Chromium performance with intelligent automation that redefines web browsing and workflow management. As these tools evolve, they are expected to set new standards for productivity and user interaction in the digital age.
