Patna’s Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, commonly known as Patna Zoo, is set to receive a major makeover aimed at improving visitor experience and modernising facilities. The Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department of Bihar has approved several important projects to transform the zoo into a more tourist-friendly, educational, and technology-driven destination.
The initiative focuses on blending nature, conservation, and modern infrastructure. Officials said the upgrade will not only enhance the zoo’s appeal but also strengthen its role in wildlife education and environmental awareness.
Tree Top Walkway to Be a Key Attraction
One of the most significant additions planned at Patna Zoo is the Tree Top Walkway, also referred to as a canopy walk. This elevated pathway will be built at the height of tree canopies, allowing visitors to walk several feet above ground level.
From the walkway, visitors will be able to enjoy views of lush greenery, bird activity, and animal enclosures from a new perspective. The project is expected to offer a unique nature experience and promote eco-tourism. This will be the first such facility introduced in any zoo in Bihar.
Officials said the design will ensure minimal disturbance to the natural environment while offering a safe and engaging experience for visitors.
Mobile App to Provide Animal and Plant Information
As part of the digital upgrade, Patna Zoo will launch a dedicated mobile application for visitors. The app will automatically display information when a visitor approaches an animal enclosure. Details such as species, habitat, behaviour, and conservation status will be available on the screen.
The app will also provide information about plants and trees inside the zoo. This digital feature aims to make zoo visits more interactive and educational, especially for students and families. Officials said the app will reduce the need for physical signboards and improve access to information.
Online Ticket Booking to Start Soon
The zoo administration is preparing to introduce online ticket booking within the next 15 days. This facility is expected to reduce long queues and make entry more convenient for visitors.
Officials said online booking will help manage crowd flow, especially during weekends and holidays. Digital tickets will also support contactless entry and improve overall management efficiency at the zoo.
Guided Tours to Begin From February
From February, Patna Zoo will start guided tours to help visitors better understand wildlife and biodiversity. Trained guides will explain animal behaviour, conservation challenges, and the ecological importance of different species.
The guided tours will also include information about plants and the overall ecosystem of the zoo. Officials believe this initiative will turn regular visits into meaningful learning experiences, particularly for students and researchers.
Security to Be Strengthened With CCTV Cameras
Security arrangements at Patna Zoo are also being upgraded. Around 150 new CCTV cameras will be installed across the zoo premises. These cameras will monitor visitor movement, animal enclosures, and sensitive areas.
The improved surveillance system will help ensure visitor safety and protect wildlife. It will also assist zoo staff in managing emergencies and preventing rule violations.
Souvenir Shops, Nurseries, and Food Kiosks Planned
To enhance visitor comfort, Patna Zoo will introduce souvenir shops where visitors can purchase keepsakes. Separate nursery shops will also be opened to sell plants at affordable prices, encouraging environmental awareness beyond the zoo campus.
Modern food kiosks will be developed to provide hygienic snacks and refreshments. Officials said eco-friendly waste management systems will be integrated to maintain cleanliness inside the zoo.
Focus on Education and Creative Spaces
The zoo plans to strengthen its educational role through new initiatives. An annual activity calendar and monthly newsletter will be introduced to share updates and learning content related to wildlife and conservation.
Seating domes and shaded areas will be built for visitor comfort. Walls inside the zoo will feature 3D paintings based on wildlife and environmental themes, making the space visually engaging and informative.
Shift Toward Eco-Friendly Operations
As part of the sustainability drive, old polluting vehicles used inside the zoo will be replaced with environment-friendly alternatives. Diesel-powered tractors will be phased out to reduce noise and air pollution.
Officials said this move will improve the habitat for animals and align the zoo’s operations with climate-friendly policies.
Volunteer and Zoo Mitra Programs
Patna Zoo will also launch volunteer and Zoo Mitra programs to involve students and local communities. These initiatives aim to create awareness about wildlife conservation and encourage public participation.
Volunteers will help guide visitors and support educational activities. Authorities believe community involvement will strengthen conservation efforts and build a sense of responsibility among citizens.
Public Feedback Shaped the Revamp Plan
Additional Chief Secretary Anand Kishor said public suggestions were invited before finalising the project. Hundreds of responses were received, and many decisions were taken based on this feedback.
He said the goal is to develop the zoo not only as a recreation spot but also as a centre for education, awareness, and conservation.
Patna Zoo Set for a New Identity
With these upgrades, Patna Zoo is expected to emerge as a modern urban wildlife destination. The combination of technology, eco-friendly practices, and educational initiatives is likely to increase visitor numbers and improve the zoo’s reputation.
Officials said the transformation will make Patna Zoo more than just a picnic destination. It will become a space where entertainment, learning, and conservation come together, setting an example for similar projects across Bihar.
