A major accident was narrowly avoided in Bihar’s Darbhanga on Saturday morning. A Scorpio vehicle carrying ten students for an intermediate examination fell into a pond near MMTM College. The incident occurred due to alleged driver negligence while reversing the vehicle. Fortunately, all students and the driver managed to escape safely.
The accident caused panic among people present near the spot. Within minutes, a large crowd gathered near the pond. Local residents immediately informed the university police station, fire brigade, and municipal authorities. Rescue efforts began soon after receiving the information.
Students Escape Safely, Major Tragedy Averted
According to eyewitnesses, the Scorpio slipped into the deep water-filled pond while being reversed. The vehicle lost balance and rolled directly into the pond. Students inside the vehicle showed presence of mind and jumped out quickly. With help from nearby people, they managed to save their lives.
The timely response of the students prevented a major tragedy. No one suffered serious injuries in the incident. Despite the accident, none of the students missed their examination. All of them reached the examination hall on time.
Rescue Operation Conducted Using JCB Crane
After the accident, chaos prevailed at the site for some time. People rushed towards the pond after seeing the Scorpio submerged in water. Authorities were informed amid the panic. Police from the university police station reached the spot along with fire brigade personnel.
Municipal officials arranged a JCB machine to recover the vehicle. After considerable effort, the Scorpio was pulled out of the pond. By that time, the vehicle had completely submerged in water. The rescue operation was completed without any further complications.
Vehicle Fell While Reversing Near the Pond
Initial information suggests that the accident occurred during reversing. The driver allegedly failed to notice the pond behind the vehicle. As a result, the Scorpio rolled into the deep pond located near MMTM College. The area reportedly lacks proper barricading near the waterbody.
Local residents stated that such incidents could occur again if safety measures are not improved. The presence of a deep pond close to a busy examination centre poses a serious risk. Authorities have been urged to take preventive steps.
Statement from Student’s Family Member
Kamlesh Kumar Yadav, a family member of one of the students, shared details of the incident. He said his two children were also traveling in the Scorpio. He expressed relief that all children survived without injuries. He described the incident as a result of divine grace.
According to him, ten students from Dudhiya village in the Keoti block regularly traveled together for examinations. They were appearing in the second shift examination on Saturday. During parking, the vehicle slipped into the pond.
Students Proceeded for Examination After the Incident
Kamlesh Kumar Yadav further said that he reached the spot after learning about the incident. By then, all students had already entered the examination centre. The priority of the students remained their examination despite the accident.
Local ward councillor Mukesh Mahaseth also reached the site after receiving information. He stated that the Scorpio had fully submerged in the pond. After informing the university police, the vehicle was recovered with help from the municipal JCB. He confirmed that all students safely appeared for their examination.
Incident Revives Memories of Recent Fatal Accident
The incident has raised concerns due to a recent tragic accident in Muzaffarpur. A few days ago, a car carrying an electricity department engineer and his colleague fell into a canal. Both occupants drowned before rescue teams could reach them.
That accident resulted in the deaths of both individuals. The vehicle was later recovered from the canal. The Darbhanga incident has once again highlighted road safety risks near waterbodies.
Questions Raised Over Safety Measures Near Examination Centres
The accident has prompted questions about traffic safety near examination centres. The presence of open ponds without barriers poses danger to vehicles. Local residents have demanded improved safety arrangements around such areas.
Authorities are expected to review safety conditions near MMTM College. Installation of warning signs and protective barriers may help prevent future incidents. Police officials said the matter is under review.
No Injuries Reported, Investigation Likely
No injuries were reported in the Darbhanga accident. All students and the driver escaped safely. Police officials are likely to examine the circumstances leading to the incident. Further action may be taken based on findings.
The incident ended without loss of life, but it served as a serious warning. Quick thinking by students and timely local help prevented a disaster. Officials have advised drivers to remain cautious near water-filled areas.
