Patna has entered a new era of scientific exploration with the inauguration of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Science City. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the project on 21 September 2025 at Rajendra Nagar, spread over 21 acres. With state-of-the-art facilities, interactive galleries, and advanced technology, the Science City is being hailed as the third largest of its kind in India.
A Landmark Event in Bihar
The inauguration ceremony was marked with enthusiasm as children, dignitaries, and officials welcomed the Chief Minister. Nitish Kumar unveiled the plaque and cut the ribbon to formally open the Science City. After the ceremony, he toured the campus and observed the galleries and scientific exhibits in detail.

Nitish Kumar expressed satisfaction with the quality of the project. He highlighted that international models, including a study visit to London’s Science City, were referenced during planning. Experts’ suggestions were incorporated to ensure that the facility meets global standards.
According to the Chief Minister, the Science City will serve as a hub of innovation and learning. It aims to attract people of all age groups and promote scientific awareness.
Inspiration from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam
Nitish Kumar emphasized the significance of naming the Science City after Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The former President and Bharat Ratna awardee had a special connection with Bihar and was deeply respected in the state. The Chief Minister shared that Kalam had always shown affection toward Bihar, and the people continue to revere him.
By dedicating this Science City to his memory, the state government hopes to inspire generations to pursue knowledge and innovation.

The exhibits were developed under the guidance of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) with support from Creative Museum Designers (CMD). In the first phase, the Be A Scientist Gallery has 12 exhibits, while the Basic Science Gallery has 35 exhibits.
Each gallery combines technology with creativity to explain scientific concepts in a simple and engaging manner. Visitors can interact with models, simulations, and digital displays, making learning a hands-on experience.
Cost and Construction
The Science City was approved with a total cost of ₹889 crore. The Department of Science, Technology, and Technical Education sanctioned the project, while the Building Construction Department carried out the execution. The project has been under construction since its foundation stone was laid on 1 March 2019.
The Chief Minister personally monitored progress, visiting the site multiple times and issuing instructions to ensure high quality. Officials were even sent abroad to study international science centres. In March 2024, Nitish Kumar himself visited London’s Science City to gather insights.
Modern Infrastructure
The Science City is not only a scientific hub but also an architectural marvel. It includes a 500-seat auditorium for events, seminars, and science shows. A dormitory with 150 beds has been built for students and teachers visiting on study tours.
Facilities also include an open-air theatre for cultural and scientific programs, a cafeteria for visitors, and dedicated parking areas. Solar panels with a capacity of 150 kilowatts have been installed to promote sustainability.
Boost to Science Education in Bihar
The Chief Minister stressed that the Science City will help students understand the basics of science in an interactive environment. By simplifying complex scientific concepts, it will encourage more young people to take interest in research and innovation.

Other notable attendees included Dr. Pratima S. Verma, Secretary of Science and Technology Department, Principal Secretary Deepak Kumar, and Kumar Ravi, Secretary of Building Construction. Several police officials, district administrators, and representatives of Bihar State Citizens Council also participated.
